I remember growing up and coming in contact with many Venezuelans. Actually, my uncle's wife was born there, and through her we met her sister and mother. Oh, the mother used to make some delicious pastels during the Christmas break. Pastels are made with ground corn with a bit of well seasoned vegetarian fake meat in the center. You normally wrap the corn dough in banana leaves and boil the pastels until they are cooked. Traditionally, they are eaten on Christmas morning with other delicacies. Apart from Christmas breakfast, you can eat pastels during other Christmas activities. I used to enjoy visiting my uncle's home during the Christmas holidays to eat several pastels during my stay. You haven't eaten anything until you’ve eaten a pastel from Mama Espinosa from the Venezuelan mainland.
